For our very first non-profit, I wanted to feature a group that is very important to me, Friends of Wake County Animal Center. I have been volunteering and fostering for Wake County Animal Center for the past year and a half and I have personally seen Friends help save and better the lives of many animals. They have helped cover medical treatments with my own foster dogs, specifically my boy Walter pictured here. Below are some of the details about just a few of the programs they help facilitate and support.

Friends of Wake County Animal Center, also known as FWCAC, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for animals in our community and their human families.

About Friends of Wake County Animal Center

Heal-A-Heart

This program sponsors heartworm positive dogs at the animal center to help new adopters treat their new dog for heartworms. The goal of this program is to increase the health of animals in our community as well as provide financial assistance to new adopters to help them treat the animal. This program greatly assists in getting these dogs adopted that would otherwise get overlooked because of this treatable disease. FWCAC directly pays the veterinarian the adopter chooses.

Low Cost Spay & Neuter Vouchers

Kitty Clip Program- Voucher program that allows any wake county resident to fix their cat/ kitten for an affordable fee. The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of unwanted and excessive kitten births in our area; reducing intake at the county shelter. Pit Stop Program - Voucher program that allows wake county residents to have their Pit Bull or Pit bull mix fixed for an affordable fee. Program goal is to reduce the amount of pit bull type dogs entering our county shelter.

Medical Rescue Program

FWCAC places sponsorships on animals who are listed as foster/ rescue. This program allows rescues to more easily step up and take animals into their programs. Additionally, we work closely with staff to identify animals who have specific treatable conditions that the shelter cannot coordinate or handle. Our team will step in to handle the case so once treated the animal can be placed up for adoption through the animal center. FWCAC also provides supplies when needed for foster animals such as special food or diets, complex medications, etc.. This reduces the burden on shelter staff and increases the number of animals leaving the animal center.

Adoption Events and Promotion

FWCAC maintains a very active Facebook page as well as other social media channels that promote animals for adoption. FWCAC also organizes and hosts adoption events for the animal center. These events give animals that are in the shelter and in the foster program an opportunity to get out and socialize as well as allow families a chance to meet them that they normally wouldn't get due to age restrictions at the shelter. The adoption event can teach us a lot about the animals and their behaviors outside the shelter.
